MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — Friends and family members are mourning the death of former Cosby High School student Alexender “Alex” Hable.

Hable, 20, died Friday after an apparent accident on a rope swing at Lake Gaston in North Carolina.  The Halifax County Sheriff said Hable was found dead on a rock around 3 p.m.  Friday. The sheriff said they were notified by people who were with Hable at the time of the accident.

Hunter Amacker, a friend and former lacrosse teammate, said he was having a hard time dealing with Hable’s sudden death.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Amacker said.  “It’s an absolute shock.  He was such a good person- his heart- always there for you on the field and off the field.”

Hable had a natural athletic ability and a talent for leading others, teammates said. Hable played for Richmond’s Shock Lacrosse Club throughout high school and played football at Cosby.

Hable was a rising junior at Virginia Tech and was a member of the university’s club lacrosse team.

Former Shock lacrosse coach Randy McDonald called Hable an inspiration to others.

“He was a very hard worker. He had a great work ethic and became a role model for his teammates and a lot of younger kids in the program,” McDonald said.

Online condolences continue to pour in for Hable’s mother, Heather, described as Hable’s biggest fan and supporter.  Some 200 people have also donated money to the family through a GoFundMe campaign.

As of Tuesday, more than $20,000 had been raised.

Friends hope a scholarship can also be created in Hable’s memory.
